FAQ
Is the sunflower contest free?
- Yes, it is! It will always stay free. Start as many projects as you like!
When is it the best time to organise the contest?
- Check online when it's the best time to plant the sun flower seeds. In countries in the Northern Hemisphere the best time to plant the seeds is at the end of April till the beginning of May. But if you organise the contest it is wise to start sooner with the preparation. These are not really big items but you have to think about these things:
- How and at what time do you inform potential participants of the contest?
- Will you buy sun flower seeds for the participants?
- How do you distribute the seeds to the participants?
- Do you provide pots as well or do you only give the seeds?
- What prizes will you have for the winners?
- Will you choose charities or can the winners pick a charity they like?
- Will you have sub competitions?
- Etc.
How long should the contest last?
- Depending on the variety sun flowers normally have a life cycle of 80 to 120 days. The nicest variety for the contest are giant sun flowers that can grow up to 2-4 meters high. Because this is what the contest is about of course :-). These varieties normally reach its maximum height around 90 to 100 days. So it could be a good idea to end the contest around 3 months after the official start.
Is there a maximum number of participants?
- No. There is no maximum. Are you a big school, organisation, village or city? No problem, you can have up to thousands of participants. Yes, even tens of thousands :-). Go for it!
What are sub competitions?
- If you have a contest with a larger number of participants it's more fun if you add sub competitions. This is good for team building and it can increase the excitement for more people since you can still do very well in a sub competition while you are in the middle of the bunch for the general ranking.
